By Brian Gaines
Vol. 6, Issue 2 (Fall 2002)

Former NAPCN President, Dr. Mildred L.G. Shaw was this year’s recipient of the Network’s Lifetime Achievement Award.  This honor was conveyed to her at the gala banquet held at the end of the NAPCN 2002 conference.

A professor emeritus of the University of Calgary, Mildred is an esteemed member of the NAPCN.  She is a Chartered Mathematician and Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and prior to retirement was a Chartered Psychologist, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Mildred helped found the NAPCN and to run NAPCN conferences in Banff in 1986 and 1996.  She served as President of NAPCN from 1992 to 2000.

Mildred ported her thesis programs from the PDP12 to the PDP 10, Apple II (PLANET) and Macintosh (RepGrid), and in 1994 set them up as a freely available World Wide Web service (WebGrid).  In the 1980s they became used in industry as one of the standard tools for knowledge acquisition in developing expert systems.

A biography in honor of Mildred’s accomplishments appeared in the Winter 1999 issue (Vol. 3, no. 1) of the Chronicle.
