Constructivism 3-D: Dialogue, Development, and Diversity in Memphis

Home

By Bob Neimeyer, Program Coordinator
Vol. 8, Issue 1 (Spring 2004)

The University of Memphis will host the 11th biennial conference of the North American Personal Construct Network, providing an interdisciplinary forum for constructivist, social constructivist, narrative and postmodern scholars and practitioners to exchange ideas in the context of a congenial and collegial professional conference. Pre- and post-conference workshops will provide both general orientation to constructivist theory and methods, and focused, hands-on training in its clinical applications. The conference itself will offer exposure to leading edge contributions to postmodern psychological and critical theory presented by internationally renowned scholars, and afford exposure to a wide range of related developments in research and practice in the form of symposia, mini-workshops, and paper presentations. And given the rich musical heritage that Memphis represents as the birthplace of rock n'roll, there will be plenty of opportunities to relax and socialize informally at the gala banquet and numerous nightspots, including the clubs and cafes of world-famous Beale Street, the home of the blues.

From Conference Web Site:

On behalf of Dr. Sara Bridges, Conference Coordinator, and the organizing committee, I am writing to let you know about an upcoming conference that you won’t want to miss:  “Constructivism 3-D: Diversity, Development & Dialogue,” sponsored by the North American Personal Construct Network.  Scheduled for June 16-21 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, the meeting will offer a rich variety of pre-and post-conference workshops, as well as a range of symposia, paper presentations and mini-workshops on the theoretical, methodological, and practical implications of constructivist, narrative, and postmodern thought.  With featured presentations from some of the leading international contributors to constructivist, social constructionist, and feminist approaches and ample opportunity to share your own work, Constructivism 3-D offers something of value for seasoned scholars and students alike.

Complementing the scholarly and professional program will be a social program, which will offer ample opportunities to explore the cultural, historic, and especially musical heritage of this unique American city.  As the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock and Roll, Memphis also helped to define the soul music of the 1960s in one of the first recording studios—Stax Records—in which black and white musicians came together to produce a unique Memphis sound.  Our conference banquet will give you a chance to explore this historic studio and its musical output, just as other free evenings will let you explore the clubs of world-famous Beale Street and the city’s many other attractions.

Just access the web page to explore all the conference has to offer—including very inexpensive housing options and steep discounts for students and early registrants—and consider submitting a presentation proposal of your own by the mid-March deadline.

Have fun perusing the site, and we hope to see you in Memphis in June!
