Mildred Shaw Honored with Lifetime
Achievement Award

Former NAPCN President, Dr. Mildred L.G.
Shaw was this year’s recipient of the Network’s Lifetime Achievement
Award. This honor was conveyed to her at the gala banquet held at the
end of the NAPCN 2002 conference.
A professor
emeritus of the University of Calgary, Mildred is an esteemed member of
the NAPCN. She is a Chartered Mathematician and Fellow of the Institute
of Mathematics and its Applications and prior to retirement was a
Chartered Psychologist, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, and an
Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
Mildred
helped found the NAPCN and to run NAPCN conferences in Banff in 1986 and
1996. She served as President of NAPCN from 1992 to 2000.
Mildred
ported her thesis programs from the PDP12 to the PDP 10, Apple II
(PLANET) and Macintosh (RepGrid), and in 1994 set them up as a freely
available World Wide Web service (WebGrid). In the 1980s they became
used in industry as one of the standard tools for knowledge acquisition
in developing expert systems.
